Linux/HP-UX DAT Tape problems?

Linux/HP-UX DAT Tape problems?

Post by Tim Ba » Fri, 24 Jun 1994 11:44:46

When I tar a file to 4MM Date tape on the HP-UX (700)
and then try to read the tape with my Linux P5...PROBLEMS!

The HP defaults to /dev/rmt/0m which is the same density
as the Linux default.

Any ideas?

I had the same "problem" when i tried to install Linux from DAT.
I did not read carfully the documentation :(.

The trick that did it to me:
on your Linux box type:

mt -t <your DAT device> setblk 10240

10240 assuming you do a standard tar on your HP. If you choose an other
value for the -b parameter of 'tar' then you multiply this value with
512 and use that for the 'setblk'.

Regards,

   Any ideas?

What type of DAT drives did you use for both writing and reading the data?
Maybe you have written the data on a HP35480 with compression mode enabled
and your other drive can't read this.
I'm using HP35480 drives on both HP9000s700 workstations and my Linux box
at home and have no problem exchanging tapes in any direction (both drives
have compression mode enabled)

Hope, this helps

Try:

  mt -t /dev/nrmt0 setblk 0

to set variable block size.

Or, block size could be different.  HP-UX uses default block size of 10k,
so try 'mt -f /dev/rmt0 setblk 10240' before tar under Linux.

1. Dat-3 Streamer: Read Linux Tapes with HP-UX

The Problem:
Our Dat-3 Streamer works fine with Linux (Suse 7.0).
Now I want to read Linux-Tapes with HP-UX 9.
So I plug the Streamer to this HP-UX  Machine.
When I try to read the Linux-tape now, i get an "input/output error".
BUT I can create, write and then read new tapes with HP-UX and the same
Streamer/Tapes .

I guess there are some paremeters different in HP-UX.
Maybe: blocksize OR  bytsawpping OR....?
