Cant install Yggdrasil Fall '94 distribution from CD-ROM.

Post by Viraf Kar » Thu, 29 Dec 1994 04:01:15

Hello Linux folks:

I have been using Slackware Linux (0.9913) for about a year now. I got the
distribution on 40 floppies (3.5") and had no problems installing it then.
The vendor was Linux Systems Labs in Michigan.

Last  week, I  decided to  upgrade  and ordered  the Yggdrasil  Fall '94
distribution from Walnut Creek CD-ROM. I followed their instructions and
made a 3.5" boot  floppy (1.44 MB). However, when I endeavor to boot the
system with this new floppy, I am unsuccessful. Here is a representation
of what appears on the console:

Console: color EGA+80x25, 1 virtual console (max 63)
Serial driver version 4.0 with no serial options enabled
tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16450
tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16450

lp_init: lp1 exists, using polling driver

PS/2 auxiliary pointing device detected - driver installedd
J-Mouse Driver installed

PCSP-device 0.6 init:
PCSP-Measurement: Maximum samplerate 38489 Hz, 18356 used
PC Speaker, PCSP-Mixer installed

ftape: allocated 3 buffers aligned at: 00230000
general protection: 0000
EIP: 0010:0017d7b7
EFLAGS: 00010206

eax: ffffffff   ebx: 00248000   ecx: 0020d8f3   edx: 00000654
ds:      0018   es:      0018   fs:      0018    ss:     0018

Process swapper (pid: 0, process nr: 0, stackpage: 001e6470)

Stack:  ffffffff,  ffffffff,  ffffffff,  ffffffff,  ffffffff
Code:   c3 67 65 74 5f 72 65 71 75 65 73 74 28 25 64 29 3a 20 69 6d

task[0] (swapper) killed: unable to recover
Kernel panic: Trying to free up swapper memory space
In swapper task - not syncing.

The system just hangs at this point. I don't know why this Yggdrasil
distribution does  not work on my system; the Slackware distribution
which I  got a  year back  (0.9913)  is quite  stable. The Slackware
distribution also  recognizes  my NEC Intersect external  CD-ROM and
allows me to mount and dismount ISO-9660 CDs from usercode root. The
configuration of my system is mentioned hereunder:

        * AST Power Premium 4/50
        * 16 MB RAM
        * Maxtor IDE hard disk (504 MB)
        * 3.5" high density (1.44 MB) floppy drive (A drive under DOS)
        * 5.25" high density (1.2 MB) floppy drive (B drive under DOS)
        * Future Domain TMC-16x0 SCSI driver, version 3.18
BIOS version 3.2, TMC-18C50 BIOS at ca000, port base at
                140; using IRQ 5
        * NEC 4FG color monitor (15")
        * HP LaserJet 4L laser printer

As a last resort, I did try  to enter the BIOS address and  IRQ at the
boot: prompt, but  even that did not work; the system  behaves exactly
the same. I can still boot  the system using my old LILO (0.9913) boot
diskette. This brings up Linux from /dev/hda1 (partition 2). Any hints
or suggestions?

Cant install Yggdrasil Fall '94 distribution from CD-ROM.

Post by Schno » Thu, 29 Dec 1994 10:32:39

I also recently purchased the Yggdrasil CDROM disk and am encountering
a similar problem.  When booting off the floppy provided by Yggdrasil I get:

Problem: block on freelist at 00400010 isn't free.
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dreference at virtual address c0000000

and then later:

task[0] (swapper) killed: unable to recover
Kernel panic: Trying to free up swapper memory space
In swapper task - not syncing

At this point it locks up.
I'm trying to get it to run on a 386/25 with 8 megs RAM, AMI BIOS, a
Maxtor 504 meg hd, and a Mitsumi CD-ROM drive (a fairly elderly one).
Anyone know what the problem is?

1. Can't install Yggdrasil summer 94 CD-ROM with SCSI-1 CD-ROM

I can't install my Yggdrasil summer 94 CD-ROM with the following SCSI
related configuration :
  1) 1 Adaptec 1542C controller
  2) 1 240MB SCSI-2 hard disk
  3) 1 Sound Blaster 16 AIC-6360 sound card
  4) 1 NEC SCSI-1 CD-ROM (I say it is SCSI-1 because ezscsi.exe provided by
Adaptec detects it as a SCSI-1 one without support for parity checking).

I have tried to install Linux with the following two configurations :
  1) connect the CD-ROM to SB16 card and the hard disk to 1542C controller :
     I typed the command
     Linux aha152x=0x340,11,7,1
to boot Linux but failed after a long period of detecting my CD-ROM
and dumped a lot of messages about the queue status.
I noticed that the parity checking is enabled.

  2) connect the CD-ROM and hard disk to 1542C with parity checking disabled
while just connect the sound output from CD-ROM to SB16 card only :

I used the default booting process and it failed a lot faster and told
me that it can't mount the CD-ROM (kernel panic : unable to mount VFS).

These two configurations work fine under both OS/2 2.1 and DOS/Windows.

Now I need help to the following questions :
  1) How can I install Linux using this CD-ROM with such config ?
  2) Which other CD-ROM distribution can I use to install Linux ?

One of the major reasons to buy CD-ROM is to run Linux. Failing to do so
frustrated me a lot. Please help me !
