Installing new packages

Post by David K Busha » Mon, 21 Nov 1994 15:02:29

Greetings,

My roommate an I have installed the basic 'A' disks on my 386sx/20
(2meg RAM and 10meg swap) computer's Maxtor HD to try it out. We used
Slackware version 1.1.59. We now want to include some other packages found
in the AP, E, and N disk sets.
The problem we are having is that we can't seem to run setup or
pkgtool to install more packages. The ones on the HD either hang or exit,
and the ones on the floppy disk give us an incompatability error and asks us to
reformat the partition. We would rather not reload everything because it
does take quite a bit of time with this slow machine.
What can we do to install these other disk sets? Can we get new
setup/pkgtools from a ftp site, or fix what we have to work? We have the
dos partition also mounted and we have the Linux disks(A, AP, etc) on there to
speed up the installing process.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Installing new packages

The problem is with that version of the kernel. My solution was to install
the 1.0.9 kernel from the Slackware 2.01 distribution (the source package,
kernel.tgz, is on the old 2.01 D series disks). Maybe someone has fixed this
problem with kernel 1.1.6x???????

Choice one: toss the computer and buy a real one ;)
        Choice two: buy more RAM
        Choice three: manually install

It's not that hard.  Mtools are one of the basic tools, so you
just mcopy the files to the / directory from the disk, then gunzip and
untar them.  They unpack to the proper directories.  Only problem is
they don't form symbolic links by themselves ;)
        Life just ain't pretty.

1. Redhat 7.3 - how install new packages from the CD package?

I have Linux Redhat 7.3 and I want to install new packages.
I have inserted installation CD1 and started kpackage. The problem is that
this reads only the packages on this CD and not on the other Redhat CDs.

I have used SuSE Linux before. The configuration program YATS allows to
select packages
which are to be installed. Then it requests to insert the correct CD(s).

How can I achieve this using Redhat?

Thanks,
Torsten
