SLS 1.05 - recompiled kernel won't boot

Post by John Fe » Sat, 14 May 1994 08:34:32

I recently installed SLS 1.05 from the cdrom and the
kernel that was installed runs fine, but the kernel
I compiled (without any configuration changes):
        cd /usr/src/linux
        make dep
        make zImage
gets "kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root"
when I boot. I did install in root and run lilo.
Has anyone run into this problem?  Found a solution?
Thanks.

Try
        cd /usr/src/linux
        make config
answer question that corresponded to your machine
        make dep
        make zImage
copy zImage to your default system directory and run lilo before reboot
        lilo
CJ.

1. SLS 1.05 kernel recompile problems!

Hi!
I have installed SLS 1.05 on a 386 Compaq. However, the ethernet
card (ETHER 16+, "NE 2000 compatible") is not recognized and
I am trying to recompile the kernel for the support. I
have the a1-4,s1, c1-3, and b1 (for the include files) disks installed.
However, when I do a "make dep", some .h files are missing in
"/usr/src/linuxc/drivers/net", such as "eth.h", "arp.h" and a host
of others. I have SLS 1.03 on another machine and brought these
in, but when I do the "make zImage", the compiler crashes with
the error that a particular member of a structure is not defined.
I think the source has been changed significantly and that
in "skbuff.h" a "data" member is not defined.

Does anyone know where I can get the right kernel source?
Also has anyone else been successful with this particular
ethernet card? Please reply by email to me directly.

Raghu
