SLIP at 0.99pl12?

Post by John Carro » Fri, 12 Nov 1993 23:17:36

I've been struggling with SLIP using Linux and have been able to ping the
server that I dial into, but nothing else.  I've got the NET-2 FAQ but was
wondering if there are any known bugs.  I'm using DIP but I don't know what fix
level (I'll find out).  I also am unable to rlogin, telnet or ftp to the
server.

Thanks in advance,

John

: I've been struggling with SLIP using Linux and have been able to
: ping the server that I dial into, but nothing else.
[...]
: I also am unable to rlogin, telnet or ftp to the server.

I had the same problem (ping ok, but telnet, ftp, etc just hang)
because my Linux system was using compressed slip and the server
wasn't.

Edit the CONFIG file in the inet directory and take out the slip
option -D that enables compressed headers.  Then recompile the kernel
and try it that way.

Okay, I've recompiled the kernel (amazingly painless) and I still can only ping
the server.  There could be problems on the host machine -- an IBM RS/6000
running AIX 3.2.4.  The documentation on SLIP for AIX is sparse at best, but it
seems to be working.  Any other ideas out there?

I had the same problems (we must be using the same software :). There is a
bug in the NET-2-HOWTO faq.  After running DIP, simply "route add default
gw <your gw address> sl0"

That should do it. don't delete any existing route info. if you still have
problems, send me a mail message..

did was recompile the kern
