Intel SatisFaxion 400 (internal) with Linux

I have an Intel SatisFaxion I'm trying to use with Linux, but can't because I
believe I need driver support for this modem.

Can anyone tell me if Linux can support this modem?

My machine: i486DX50; 32MB RAM; Adaptec 1742A; Intel SatisFaxion 400
            internal modem, ...

I got this modem to work with linux.  What I did:
(1) First, I used the setup program that runs under DOS and set the
modem to com3, IRQ5, so that I could still use com1 and com2.
(2) I booted linux, and modified drivers/char/serial.c in the kernel.  I
    changed:
        { 0, BASE_BAUD, 0x3E8, 4, STD_COM_FLAGS },      /* ttyS2 */
    to:
        { 0, BASE_BAUD, 0x3E8, 5, STD_COM_FLAGS },      /* ttyS2 */
to change the IRQ.  Recompiled the kernel, and re-ran lilo.
(3) I changed /etc/inittab so that /dev/ttyS2 is set at 38400.  I think
that 19200 is fine though.  I re-booted linux.
(4) I've used minicom and kermit, and they both work fine.
(5) Oh, if you want to use the modem to answer phone calls (e.g. using
mgetty), make sure that the modem is configured so that it will
NOT auto-answer (using the DOS setup program).

Here's the CATCH though.  Before the modem will work (i.e. accept AT
command, etc.), one must boot DOS first.  This took me a while to track
down.  I couldn't figure out why it would work sometimes and not others.
As a result, I have to boot DOS first everytime I turn on the machine,
or when it reboots and goes through the memory check.

QUESTIONS I HAVE ABOUT THE MODEM:

(1) How can I get around this problem of having to boot DOS first?
(2) The modem has a separate IRQ (10) and address for the FAX part.
Can I send and receive faxes using linux?  Do I need a special driver
since the FAX part doesn't seem to go through the serial port?
    The modem responds to an:

    AT+FCLASS=?

with "0".  On my Zoom external modem I do get "0,1,2" to my query
which is what I would expect for a FAXmodem.  The Intel modem and
send and receive FAXes from DOS.

To load the driver for this moden you have to boot DOS first
to load the driver. Then do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to warm boot into
Linux. The SatisFaxion driver will remain loaded as long as
you do not Reset or power down your PC.
