slackware 1.1.1 + LaTeX2e (from slackware 1.1.2)

Hello world,

Yesterday I have been hacking around getting*(disks T1, ..., T5 from
Slackware 1.1.2) installed into my Slackware 1.1.1 installation, the instal-
lation part was not much of job.

But the problems started at the moment I started texing the samples from
the directory ... where the files test0.tex test1.tex .... are.

Here a selection of the file test0.log:

        File `array.sty' not found.
New name (default extension: sty) or <RETURN>?
        Enter file name:
        (/usr/TeX/lib/texmf/tex/nfss2/nfot1var.sty
        Style-Option: `nfot1var' v1.0g <93/08/16> (FMi and RmS)
English Documentation          <93/07/17> (FMi and RmS)
        )
        File `nftimes.sty' not found.
New name (default extension: sty) or <RETURN>?
        Enter file name:
        (test0.aux)
        .
        .
        .

Missing character: There is no ^^c7 in font cmr10!
Missing character: There is no ^^b2 in font cmr10!
Missing character: There is no ^^a7 in font cmr10!
Missing character: There is no ^^b3 in font cmr10!
Missing character: There is no ^^b6 in font cmr10!
Missing character: There is no ^^a3 in font cmr10!
        ! Undefined control sequence.
        l.45 \pounds    & \verb|\pounds|    & {\j
                                                } & \verb|\j|\\
The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

Quite severe problems.

Further:
        - dvips keeps using metafont,
could be a problem of initially not enough fonts available.
        - I did a chmod -R a+w ../fonts in order to allow dvips (or metafont)
to write the generated fonts into ../font/tmp instead of generating
a message that it couldn't do this.
        - somewhere I see german and ... hyphenation files, questions:
          1. how to select another language in latex2e
          2. how to add another language (for example duch)

Greetings from Nijmegen,
