Can't FTP INTO my Linux Box

Can't FTP INTO my Linux Box

Post by Joe DeFrancis » Tue, 09 Aug 1994 06:05:38

Please help, I have set up Slackware 2.0, and am on a SLIP connection.
Anonymous FTP works into my Linux box, but the Users I've assigned just
get the message "Login failed: user access denied"

Anybody know what causes this? I had the same problem with 1.1.2.

Thanks very much.

Anonymous logins work OK, for some reason. Only real users can't log in.

If you are using the tcpd server for your INET services (that is what the
Slackware distribution default setup is), you have to specify which hosts
are allowed to use those services in the /etc/hosts.allow file.

Not sure if /ect/hosts.allow is the solution.  /etc/hosts.allow defines the
names of the hosts which are allow to use the local INET services (not names
of users).  The users that you defined via useradd or adduser should have a
valid password in /etc/passwd.  It always work for me.  Someone also
experienced the same problem and it turned out the he was using a very old
version of the kernel (that's what he told me).

1. Can't ftp to Linux box from windows ftp client

I have setup wu-ftpd proftpd and ncftpd and they
all have the same problem. I try to ftp to my
linux box, mandrake if it makes a difference,
from a dos window in windows, I connect and
login, but if I issue an ls or dir, it just
hangs. I get nothing until a control connection
timout. I have tried to use quote pasv since I am
behind a firewall with nat and still same
problem. But, from the same pc I can connect just
fine with wsftp, in passive mode. But I can not
connect from IE5. I just don't get it. Same
problem with three different servers. So I guess
it is not the server. Anyone have any input?
I am thinking something with the return trip. I
can login to other ftp servers with command line
just not my box. Also, linux to linux is fine..
