: Hello all, will a simple Conner 250MB (compressed) tape drive work in linux?
: I'd like to know before I make this purchase... Thanks!
: Also I want to upgrade my video card in the near future. Will Linux take advantage
: of S3-based windows accelerator cards, in Xfree86 2.0??
A conner tapestor QIC-80 drive will work if you can load
the ftape-0.9.6 package. I have been messing with this
on my jumbo 120 QIC-40 drive (same software) and I can
make a backup to a tape, but I get an I/O error at some point
(usually pretty far into) the restore. Even when I _can_
restore tar -d (diff) often shows differences in the files.
My recommendation would be to buy a SCSI tape drive of
some kind. Of course an Archive (now conner) Python
2 gig DAT would be nice, but who has $1100. There are some
525 mb scsi tape drives out there, and this seems like a
good investment. I would stick with :
Conner (Archive)
Wangtec (Wangdat)
Exabyte
If you can't afford these, then Linux supports QIC-02
drives, which I heard..... can be had for small $$$$.
For Video I recommend STB Powergraph VL-24
(Local Bus, 1MB DRAM, S3 805)
Treasure Chest - $129
I was gonna buy a conner tapestor, but the ftape
driver is still tooo ALPHA for me.
Besides, even if they do get it to work, it is
really slow. (20 minutes for 40 MB on my system)
