Internal vs. External modems

Post by Renford McDona » Sat, 06 Aug 1994 05:36:09

I notice a lot of requests for modems for Linux but, none so far has
specify if the recommendations (boca multi port, digicom) ware for
external or internal.
I have a few internal modems I would like to use and from what I have
read beyond 4 system performance begins to suffer. What I would like
to know is if these recomendations are for boxes with dedicated
processors that extend the amount of slots in your pc by way of some
kinda of external expansion box.  I heard about such a thing about 4
or 5 years back so supposedly it does/did exist at one point.

Internal vs. External modems

: I notice a lot of requests for modems for Linux but, none so far has

I would definitly advice you to use external modems. Here is why :

        - you have front end leds. You can see what's happening.

        - they have their own power supply, their own box and so on. You
won't break your whole PC the day you'll get 25kV over the phone
        line.

        - you can plug as many as you want. When your four com ports are
used, you can install a multi port board or even a term server.

        - you can replace/add/remove devices on the fly. (though I've seen
on internal modems too, but *really*, you shouldn't do that -().

        - you can transport them, and using them on something else than PC.

        - often, you have more features on external modems (such as
        synchronous communications).

Why not :

        - a little bit more expensive.

1. internal vs external modem

with certain internal modems, you may have to go some hoops for get them
properly recognized (pnp modems in particular)  Once they're recognized as
valid serial devices, however, the setup is identical.
