Cirrus Logic text modes at LILO boot.

Post by Laszlo Radanyi » Mon, 19 Sep 1994 02:01:52

well, I've just installed a nowadays almost standard
Cirrus Logic CLGD-5428 card into my system.

During tha past few hours, I've hassled around with
DOS/MS-Windows settings, Xconfig adjustments for
my cheapo monitor and then, finally, I just came
across a problem I couldn't master.

After LILO was installed, I tried to start with my
favourite VGA setting 80x43. This has worked on
my old work-horse, a Trident TVGA-8900C. Usually
I had many modes to choose from:

80x25
80x28
80x30
80x43
80x60
132x25
132x28
132x43
132x60

but the new Cirrus card showed up only two available
modes:

(0) 80x50
(1) 80x28

so there was not even a normal 80x25 mode available !
( Yet, the bootup used the standard VGA setting of
80x25 !! )

Hey, this might very well be a FAQ issue, I just
haven't an idea where to look this up.

The problem is not less irritating because of the
fact that termcap states that the Cirrus chip
supports 100x37 char mode, which I would consider as
premium.

The Cirrus manual says that the available text
displays are:

  cXr      text     char    screen
            or      cell    format
         graphics

 30x30          G               8x16    640x480
 40x25          T               9x16    360x400
 80x25          T               9x16    720x400
 80x30          G               8x16    640x480
100x37          G               8x16    800x600
128x48          G               8x16   1024x768

These were just a few modes, but they are quite a few
more than what LILO thinks are available.

SO THE QUESTION: How can I access these modes at boot
                 time ?

---

I use LILO 0.14, as it was shipped with Slackware 1.2.
I guess the kernel doeesn't matter, but I use 1.1.38.
The Cirrus card has BIOS version 1.30.

Any help out there ?

Thanks

Laszlo

The modes labeled with 'G' are silly. They are graphics modes, the
columnsXrows figure doesn't mean anything.

With cirrus 54xx setup.S support, you should be able to get 132x25
and 132x43.

Ahh, but you can't you see.  :)  The magic numbers don't match
anything, any you end up with 80x28 or 80x50.  That's all.

Yes you can.  After installing the version of setup.S that has Cirrus
54xx support, I now get options for 132x25 and 132x43.  I forget which
FTP site I got it off of, but hopefully it'll be folded into the main
distribution sometime soon.

Christoph Niemann has made it available on ftp.swt.ruhr-uni-bochum.de
in /pub/linux/cirrus
