Non-SCSI QIC Tape & Slackware 1.2.0

Non-SCSI QIC Tape & Slackware 1.2.0

Post by russ mcelr » Mon, 29 Aug 1994 12:20:32

I am tinkering with Slackware 1.2.0 and am pleased with how well
everything goes together, except I'd like to use my Archive Viper
qic tape to back up my Linux filesystem.

I have waded through the faqs and how-to's to no avail.  I see lots
on SCSI devices and on floppy-controller tape drives, but not a
thing on my "standard" qic-02 drive!

Can anyone point me to an answer ?

Thanks in advance.

Same here.
First, in Linux, there is no such device for the standard QIC-02 controller
equipped tape drives.

I have used Linux at my home (happily) and FreeBSD
at work (also happily).  Recently, I bought used QIC-02 tape drive
which works fine with FreeBSD without any tinkering.
I just can't get it work under Linux at home.

I checked out FAQ, and related man pages, and still don't have a clue.
Is it just not possible ?
Please let me know ASAP.  If not possible, I have to replace Linux
with FreeBSD before I am getting really busy.

Thanks.

Look in /usr/include/linux/tpqic02.h.  Change the appropriate
configuration parameter macros, reconfigure and rebuild the kernel.

the QIC-Devices are "/dev/rmt*" for rewind on close or "/dev/nrmt/ for non
rewind on close (for scsii and non scsii Drives). The major unit number must
be 12. Minor numbers depents on type:

0       automatic reconize
2       QIC-11  ( 24MB,  4 track, 10,000 ftpi)
4       QIC-24  ( 60MB,  9 track, 10,000 ftpi)
6       QIC-120 (120MB, 15 track, 10,000 ftpi)
8       QIC-150 (150MB, 18 track, 10,000 ftpi)

you have to edit the file "/usr/src/linux/include/tpqic02.h" (Linux 1.0.8)
to config the kernel and recompile the kernel bevor using the devices.

Excuse my bad english.

Mit freundlichen Gr?en

1. Archive QIC-02 tape drive (non SCSI)

Greetings,
I am new to this group so forgive me if i missed something.

I am trying to setup an Archive 2150L tape drive (QIC-02, 150MB) on a
Linux box (kernel 1.3.18). The tape drive is not SCSI, it connects to
an Archive VP-402 Adapter card (ISA).

This combination (drive - adapter) works fine under SCO Unix / Xenix
(it is supported by the SCO not Archive).

Are non SCSI QIC-02 tape drives supported by Linux?
The FTAPE and SCSI HOWTO say nothing about it, Archive Corp. is
history now and i'm desperate :(( coz i'll have to copy 200+MB of data
using 1.44MB floppies!!

Does any one tried this before? Any suggestions, related FAQs or
documentation??

Thanks In Advance.
