Orchid Kelvin 64, ASUS MB, XFree 3.1... trashed fonts WHY??

: I didn't have this problem in XFree2.1 and now using XFree3.1 when I exit
: X-windows the text screens are all messed up.  runx does *not* help.

: actually it's even weirder... the first time I exit X-windows everything is
: fine... the second time I start and exit X-windows everything is then
: messed up.

I have the exact same problem on my SIS-460 based AMD-DX40 with Orchid
Kelvin. Not a big deal since I usually stay in X; but should be fixed.

I think the someone has already suggested a 'fix'... there's a
different startx-type script which can be run in place of startx
that saves and restores the fonts (called 'runx' in /usr/bin).

It performs a restorefont -w /tmp/fontdata before calling startx,
then performs a restorefont -r /tmp/fontdata when startx exits.

My VLB Kelvin had the same problem... worked for me.

Good Luck,
Dave

This has already been discussed in this newsgroup, just a few days ago.

The problem is caused by the detection routine for another chipset (the
pvga1 driver in the SVGA server) corrupting something on the Cirrus
5434 chip. A work-around is to use a Chipset "clgd5434" line in the
Device section, avoiding the detection routines.

Apart from this, the textmode font may not be correctly restored, but
that should be fixable by reloading the VGA textmode font, i.e. using
programs like runx/restorefont/setfont.

I have a ASUS pentium 60Mhz motherboard and a Orchid Kelvin 64 PCI card
with 1Meg video RAM.

Could somebody tell me why this is happening and how to solve it??  I have
even tried "noaccel" and "no_bitblt" options but they don't help.

1. XFree 3.1 - Orchid Kelvin XFConfig

Does anyone have a working setup for the Cirrus CL-GD5434 based Orchid
Kelvin video card?
