X windows vs MS-windows 3.1 (MS wins)

Hi Linuxers,

I currently tried to install Xfree windows on my Linux box..
(Kernel 1.0, slackware distribution, 386 sx 16MHZ (don't laugh)
8 MB mem, 256K VGA card (don't laugh again), vga monitor
(not multisync) )

Using the monochrome X windows driver which requires only 64K of
video memory, I noticed that X windows were very slow compared to
MS-windows..I also had problems moving my mouse while waiting for
a window to open..Also the background screen in X windows was much
smaller than the background screen in Ms-Win...I am not a
windows fan (any kind of windows require a lot of system resources and
fast expensive hardware)..but I think X win could be better..

                                                        Regards,
                                                       Constantine

Upgrade your hardware and X will fly.  Really.

I use Linux in a very demanding work environment, running X-apps remotely
over a network.  I have everyone drooling over my system because of its
speed.  While everyone else who has PCs is running Windows plus a
commercial X client, eXceed, my "free" system is kicking butt.  We have a
confirmed 450% or so increase in speed going from Windows to Linux/X in
one sample case.  For X performance, Linux and X wins, hands down.

You can fix this yourself. Figure out the math and take a calculator to
your Xconfig file. You can easily have a display running off both sides of
your monitor. It sounds like your video modes are configured very poorly.

Constantine is correct. I'm running on similar hardware (except I have an
ATI XL24 w/1meg of RAM). I have not experianced the Mono X Server but my
guess is that it is similar in performance to the 16 color X Server. Video
performance with this Server is very poor (it is still new, though). The
256 color SVGA Server is considerably faster (strange as it may seem). But
then there is the mouse performance problem. I originally started with a
Serial mouse. Linux would not even let it run at 2400, had to bump it down
to 1200 for it to work. This was awful. I then switched to using my built
in ATI busmouse port and mouse performance improved. Although the mouse
still get the jitters when an X application is loading. It appears that
Linux (Slackware) is not able to manage interrupts as well as It should.
Windows does generally perform better on this low end hardware.
