Samba and LanManager

Hello netters,

I've been trying to use Linux as a server using Microsoft's Lanmanger
(DOS mode, configured with TCPIP and NetBEUI(?WTF?)) and I can't seem to
log in.  I tried this two ways: The first way, I neglected to install
NetBEUI on the client side (LanManager) and compiled/used Samba in
daemon mode.  Apparently, when I use
net use D: \\myhost\squish
the request is logged in samba's log file but returns a "no
authorization" error.  It never asked for a password, and I assume that
it's using the userid that I placed in the install program for
Lanmanager.

However, with NetBEUI installed, on bootup, the last thing that occurs
in the client's autoexec is to ask a password.  I type in my password
there(for user squish) and Lanmanger reports that there are no hosts on
line.  I checked the process table of my Linux box and sure enough, it's
there.  But this time, the log files didn't make any note of that
occurring.  Then, I tried the "net use..." command.  Still not a blip in
my logs.  Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks in advance...
-bc

p.s.  This is a tiny network and it isn't gatewayed to the Internet but
I am using TCP/IP over Ethernet.

For Samba 1.11 :

1 - See in section [global], file smf.conf, parameter protocol.
If you use COREPLUS (default), you will have to pass the password
in command line (net use d: \\myhost\squish <password>). For
protocol = LANMAN1 LANManager client will ask you for password
(but you must have to use only lowercase in password).

2 - See parameters allow hosts (default = all) and username (default = all
with account in your linux machine).

Bye

1. Lanmanager, alone or with SAMBA ????

Dear netters,

For the experts a hopefully simple question.
I downloaded the lanmanager files from ftp.microsoft.com.
Is this ENOUGH to get a server and clients running or does
this only provide me with clients?
(In other words, how do I start a server with just lanmanager
        on a few pc's in a network)

Is samba a possible server (on linux) for pc's running
        lanmanager?

What I in the end want to have is a few linux and dos
pc's combined in a network sharing diskdrives and printers!

        Thanks for all advice.

        Regards,
        Jan Willems.
