Having 1.1.* kernel problems

Having 1.1.* kernel problems

I'm having trouble getting 1.1.* kernel run on my system. I currently run
1.0.9 from the Slackware 2.0 distribution that I've recompiled for my
system without any problems, but I've got that "I need the newest, bestest,
fastest, etc." syndrome so ...

Anyway, have 1.1.51 compiled with no problems but when I boot I it gets to
the partition check and mounts the root read-only and then freaks out:

Partition check:
  sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 sda4
VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly
general protection: 0103
EIP: 0010:001136af
EFLAGS: 00010246
... register dumps ... (can supply if necessary)
process swapper (pid: 0, process nr: 0, stack page=00a43a4)
Stack: ...
Code: .. .. ..
kfree of non-kmalloced memory: 001a539c, next=00000000, order=0
task[0] (swapper) killed: unable to recover
Kernel panic: Trying to free  up swapper memory space
In swapper task - not syncing.

And then its hung. I've got a similar, if not identical, response from a
1.1.18 kernel I tried. If I look up the EIP I get the following context
from my /usr/src/linux/tools/zSystem image:

     00113630 T _sprintf
     00113648 T _sys_ni_syscall
     00113648 t ___gnu_compiled_c
     00113648 t gcc2_compiled.
     00113648 t sys.o
     00113658 T _sys_idle
     001136b8 t _proc_sel
     00113778 T _sys_setpriority
     00113868 T _sys_getpriority
     001138d8 T _sys_profil
     001138e8 T _sys_ftime
     001138f8 T _sys_break

And now for the specifics of my configuration:

     - Intel 486 DX4/100
     - 20MB RAM
     - Adaptec 1542CF (standard config)
     - GUS-MAX w/ 1MB (default config from sound driver)
     - SCSI HD & SCSI CD-ROM
     - Diamond Viper VGA VLB
     - 2 serial, 1 parallel
     - Some other trivial stuff no doubt...

I've never had 1.0.9 even think about freaking out. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
