How to switch <CapsLock> and <Ctrl> keys

Post by dw.. » Thu, 11 Nov 1993 04:44:00

Hi everyone,

I don't like the way 101-keyboard lays out its <CapsLock> and <Ctrl>
keys and am looking for a way (patch in kernel?) to swap these two
keys.

I've looked some HOWTOs and read this group constantly, but didn't
see anyone rises this question (or I missed it 8-().  Any suggestion
in how to accomplish this?

Thansk in advance!!!

Read the man page on Xmodmap.  It tells you how its done.

That, however, does absolutely no good if you don't run X on your
system.  All it takes under DOS is a small TSR to remap Ctrl and Caps
Lock; couldn't something similar be put into Linux?

(If nothing else, I suppose I could dig up a keyboard that lets you
flip a switch to move the keys around.)

If you are using a modern Linux version (pl13 counts, don't know
about pl10-12) that supports keytable files you can just make a custom
keymap. Then use loadkeys to load it in. Slackware has loadkeys and
some keymaps. It isn't too hard to figure out what needs to be switched
around in the key map file to switch the two keys.

P.S. (my personal opinion). Swapping CTRL and CAPS LOCK can be _REALLY_
confusing to users that don't exect/aren't used to it. I know from
experience. ;(

From the been there, done that department: check out loadkeys at your
favorite site; I think it comes with the newer (>= pl12?) kernels.
Make sure you get a version which matches your kernel version, incompatible
loadkeys and kernels have been known to cause ``interesting'' problems.

There is also loadkeys for those that don't live in X.

Ok, then you need to modify the keytable you load from /etc/rc.
This is what I did:

*** us.map      Mon Aug 16 05:54:06 1993
--- us.map.ctrl-caps    Tue Sep 21 01:02:07 1993
***************
*** 55,61 ****
        alt     keycode  27 = Meta_bracketright
  keycode  28 = Return
        alt     keycode  28 = 0x080d
! keycode  29 = Control
  keycode  30 = a
  keycode  31 = s
  keycode  32 = d
--- 55,61 ----
        alt     keycode  27 = Meta_bracketright
  keycode  28 = Return
        alt     keycode  28 = 0x080d
! keycode  29 = Caps_Lock
  keycode  30 = a
  keycode  31 = s
  keycode  32 = d
***************
*** 97,103 ****
  keycode  57 = space            space
        control keycode  57 = nul
        alt     keycode  57 = Meta_space
! keycode  58 = Caps_Lock
  keycode  59 = F1               F11              Console_13
        control keycode  59 = F1
        alt     keycode  59 = Console_1
--- 97,103 ----
  keycode  57 = space            space
        control keycode  57 = nul
        alt     keycode  57 = Meta_space
! keycode  58 = Control
  keycode  59 = F1               F11              Console_13
        control keycode  59 = F1
        alt     keycode  59 = Console_1

Note, this keytable mod does NOT affect X, so you have to have BOTH
this mod AND the .Xmodmap entry.

1. <Alt>+<key> = <Esc><key> ?

Hi,

How should I tell Xserver to treat simultaneous press (in editor) on
<Alt>+<E> as <Esc><E>, like under VC. Now it returns A with circle on
top.
Therefore, I want the same behaviour of Alt_L under X and console.

Best regards.
