Don't want the virtual X screen bigger than physical screen

Don't want the virtual X screen bigger than physical screen

Post by Brian Conne » Fri, 21 Jan 1994 21:43:51

A friend has asked me to post this.

He is running a Linux system whereby the physical size of is screen is
14 inches, but the virtual X screen available seems to be about 19 inches.
This means that by approaching the perimeter of his physical with the mouse
pointer, the screen scrolls to display more of the virtual.
He wishs to change the parameters so that the virtual is the same size as
the physical.

How should he go about doing this?  P.S. Please e-mail your replies.

Thank you.

: Read the HOWTO's and FAQ's before you post questions!!

Now, now, you could tell him which file to read amongst
all FAQs and HOWTOs, in the same breath...

  For the other guy...

Take a look in your X386 directory
X386/lib/X11/lib (in my distribution that is), there should
be a bunch of files like modeDB.txt, READMEs, VideoConfig
etc... Take an evening to read these and you'll be set.
To find these files on your distribution, find is your
  friend. Try at the /

  find . -name modeDB.txt -print
  or
  whereis modeDB.txt

Hope you find what you're looking for.

1. no virtual desktop, still the desktop bigger than the screen

Hi,

I have set up X in Slackware to run in the 800x600 resolution
with no virtual desktop. However when I start X windows, the
desktop is still a little bit bigger than the monitor screen.

It seems that this is not the virtual desktop problem because
the desktop is only *slightly* bigger than the screen, and
there is only one virtual panel available.
The problem disapears when I swith to higher resolution.

What may be wrong?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
