I just installed X version 2.1.1 from the Slackware 2.0.0 disks, and
had a bit of a difficulty.
My machine is a brand new Dell P5/60. It uses the S3 chipset. It has
a dell UltraScan Monitor. When I run SuperProbe, it says:
First Probe: Super-VGA
Chipset: S3 (chipset unknown)
Signature data: 0xe1 (please report)
Memory: 1024 Kbytes
RAMDAC: Generic 8bit pseudo color DAC
All this info seems to match what I know about the video card, but the
0xe1 is puzzling. I've installed the S3 X server.
When I run 'startx', I get:
(--) S3: Unknown S3 chipset: chip_id = 0xe1
I suspect the problem is that because my machine is brand new, the
chipset may have been updated slightly and the server doesn't
recognize the new signature. Any ideas on how to fix this? Do I
need a custom build of the server?
Thanks for your help.
