Mach64: Got clocks, Need order

Post by Thomas L. Fo » Thu, 22 Sep 1994 04:39:05

Ok, After calling Gateway 2000 and ATI for most of the morning, I finally
got the dotclocks for the Mach64 out of them (most of the tech support
people didn't know what they were).  But, I have no idea what order they go
in.  The man page for Xconfig says:

The ordering of clocks is important.  It must match the order
in which they are selected on the graphics board.

So I called ATI tech support again.  They had no idea.  I asked about any
programming information and was told that the _Mach64 Programmers Reference
Manual_ was not released yet and was still in beta form.

Has anyone seen this manual?  And is the order of the dotclocks in there?

Thanks,
Tom

Ok. After spending half the morning on the phone with Gateway and ATI, I
finally got the dotclock info out of them (most of the tech support people
hadn't heard of them).  Now that I have them, the man page for Xconfig says:

The ordering of clocks is important.  It must match the order in
which they are selected on the graphics board.

I called ATI back and their tech support said it was probably in the
_Mach64 Programmers Reference Manual_ which hasn't been released yet and
is still in beta form.

Has anyone out there seen this manual?  Does it have the info I need?

Thanks,
Tom

You could have saved yourself a lot of trouble if you had read the
README.ati that came with the server you picked up (which, I assume, is

contains the clock ordering you should be using.  If not, then the
included driver source certainly does.

If you are not talking about this server, but are trying to use the SVGA
server from XFree86 2.1.1 (or earlier), you will not be able to get much
more than 640x400 in 256 colours.

The Xfree86 3.1 SVGA server, due out shortly, will contain more complete
support for Mach64's, but the clock ordering will be different.  Again,
the README.ati included with it will help there too.

Mach64: Got clocks, Need order

Thanks for all the help that people gave me in getting X configured.  I
finally did get it, and I was using the proper clocks and order.

It turns out I had the same font problem that was discussed earlier in this
group, but it was exiting X before it cleared the video buffer and all I
saw was 'garbage' on the screen.  I knew about the font thing, but thought
I would fix the video thing first!!

Anyway, I finally got it working, now its on to bigger and better things
(like DOOM).

Later,
Tom

Could you post what you found on the mach64 for the rest of us.
Thanx,
Art.

1. X 4.0.2 not getting ATI Mach64 dot clock right

I have a creaky old system with a 2MB PCI ATI WinTurbo.
It is Mach64-based.

With XFree 3.3.6 (and everything that came before it), the
X server properly retrieved from the card the fact that
the card had a max dotclock of 135MHz.

But when I use XFree 4.0.2, the X server somehow gets
the idea that the card only has a max dotclock of 80MHz.

This is annoying because it makes me lose my 1280x1024
and 1154x864 resolutions.

I have tried specifying the no_program_clocks and/or
no_bios_clocks options and have put in a Clocks line.

Unfortunately, the server appears to ignore the Clocks
line no matter what.

The README.Mach64 provides no help on this.

Any ideas?
