cannot start X properly

Post by Marcel Ka » Sun, 17 Jul 1994 08:48:07

Hi,
I bought Linux from Trans-Ameritech a couple of weeks ago.
Everything installed fine, but when I do xinit or startx I get some
unsynchronized, overlapping, flashing windows.
I tried everything in the doc, and endless combinations in Xconfig.
SuperProbe gives the right answer.
X -probeonly gives me some clocks but they don't help.

I have a Trident tvga9000 card (TVGA SUPER 16) with 512K,
and an AAMAZING monitor Super-VGA, CM8486TX, 1024x768.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There should be a file called modeDB.txt in
.../X386/lib/X11/etc. There are a lot of cards described there with
working modelines. Plus all the VESA standard timings are there. These
VESA lines should work with all the VGA cards

Hope this helps

1. RH 7.3 cannot start properly after install...

I just got a new computer last week, had WinXP installed on the Primary
Master drive(hda). I have 2 SCSI hard drives and decide to put RedHad 7.3
personal on one of them(sdb). I have it installed using grub as bootmanager.
the installation process runs fine without any problem. and after install it
restarts the computer and grub starts with no problem, I got in
Linux.......now here is the problem. It tries to go in KDE, but I can only
see the botton half of the screen, the top half is black with some white
lines and some snows. As for the bottom half, all the icon's text becomes a
box of burre. and the mouse moves but everything else doesn't. it just hangs
there. After about 5 min of waiting and nothing moved, I press the "reset"
button and try to go in linux again, this time I can't even see the icon,
but the the screen is now becomes the "MS-windowsXP pro shutting down"
screen.... And the mouse cursor is still there and moves but everything else
just hangs.............it really confuses me how did Linux get the WinXP
shut down screen?? I tried to reinstall a couple times with LILO and grub
and different settings, but it all ends up the same, the first time is half
screen, and 2nd time the WinXP shut down screen. I am starting to wonder if
it could be the video card problem. here is my hardware list:

Intel P4 2.0AGHz
ASUS P4S533
onboard audio/NIC/USB
512MB DDR 2700
ATI Rage Fury MAXX AGP 64MB
(this video card has 2 of rage 128 pro chip, I just choose rage 128 pro 32MB
during linux setup since they don't have fury MAXX, and I basically just use
whatever the Linux probed.)

See if you experts know anything that might have cause the problem. thanx.
