I am a Linux newbie and I am encountering difficulties with the
command sh Xinstall.sh -check prior to upgrading to Xfree86 4.1.

The output of the above command tells me about four things - i686,
kernel (2.2.14) etc. - but it doesn't tell me about libc or binary
name distribution. It crashes with the libc check.

Is this a problem with downloading the Xinstall.sh file? I have
followed others' advice to download Xinstall.bin, renaming it to
Xinstall.sh, but the "error" remains.

I am using IE 5.5 to download the file to my Windows partition. My
Linux installation is Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4.

Any suggestions to fix the problem will be gratefully received.

An update to my message: in fact the error that crashes the sh
Xinstall.sh -check command is to do with "ldd", not libc. sh reports
it cannot find that command.

I hope this helps with identification of the problem.

The problem has been solved. I had to fully install Caldera OpenLinux
to enable access to the software libraries for the sh Xinstall.sh
-check command to work.

I am posting this just in case this helps other people if they are
having the same trouble as me!
