X11 and p5-90 w/ PCI STB 864 video card, help!

Post by Gautam Thak » Sat, 12 Nov 1994 14:52:10

I have a gateway 2000 p5-90 with at
PCI STB 864 video card. I am running LINUX 1.1.59 on it. I have used
linux for a long time on many machines and can always get X11 running on
it, but this new machine has me stumped.

I have tried to run both XF86_SVGA and XF86_S3 with it. I have no luck.
I tried to have it tell me clocks but it only gives 2-3 clocks and
README says that for this I might want to ask for help from the
newsgroup. Superprobe says:

First videp: Super-VGA
    chipset: S3 (unknown chip set)
       signature data: c0 (please report)
    mem:  2k
RAMDAC: AT&T 20c492 15/16/18-bit DAC with gamma correction
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode.))

I mostly have tried to get XF86_SVGA to run. I tried various chipsets
and it has never come up. (Once I barely got something up, but it was
unreadable.)

Any and all hints welcome about how i might get X on this fancy machine.
Is this supported in any server?

It looks like you dont have X11R6 's XF86_S3

The chip id "0xc0" is for an S3 864 which is supported on XFree86-3.1

        Have fun,

he doesn't need XF3.1, I'm running this with XF2.1 just ifne, though
at only 640x480 :( there exists a version of XF2.1's XF86_S3 for the
864 chipset...it's available at 199.75.44.22 for anon ftp for those
interested.

No, no, no, nooooooooo.

Don't use these XFree86 2.1* hacks for 864, use XFree86 3.1 if you really
want to use most/all features of your card and don't want to risk frying
your ramdac or S3 chip with higher pixel clocks

This ever was a bogus advice to use those servers and now that XFree86 3.1
IS available its plain stupid.

If you're not familar with S3 programming and XF86_S3 internas, please don't
post such advices in the news groups,

The S3 Vision864 has a raw pixel clock limit of 95MHz whereas the 2.1.1 server
and most RAMDACs "allow" 110MHz. If you want to use more than 95MHz you really
should use pixel multiplexing which isn't supported in 2.1.1.

I'm still looking for a reason for such a "real need" other than avoiding
X11R6/XFree86-3.1 bugs.

NO, that's not true. It's no problem at all to run X11R5 clients with
a X11R6 [XFree86-3.1] server. You only have to use the X11R6 server
if your hardware isn't supported in XFree86 2.1.1. You don't even
need the X11R6 shared libs for the X11 server; just a new server binary,
a new XF86Config file and a symbolic link pointing
from /usr/X11R6 to /usr/X386.
