Gateway 2000 DX2/66V floppy + Adaptec 1542B & Linux

I seem to have run into an incompatibility with using
an Adaptec 1542B in a Gateway 2000 DX2/66V (that uses
a Micronics motherboard).

The floppy drive is flaky on the machine.  I've tried using
the floppy controller on the Adaptec and the motherboard,
and both don't work.  But, the floppy works just fine when
I pull the Adaptec card out.

I had the floppy disabled in BIOS when the controller was in.

Has anyone run into this problem?  Is there a solution?
The Gateway people don't seem to have an answer.

This might be something to put in the Linux Hardware FAQ if
anyone else has run into this.

Or, of course, it could be just me.

You have to disable the Adaptec's floppy controller in *hardware* -- I
believe there's a jumper or switch on the board; check your hardware
manual.  The problem is that the two floppy controllers are stepping
on one another.

I disabled the floppy drive with the jumper when I used the
on-board floppy controller, and I disabled the floppy through
the BIOS when I used the Adaptec's floppy controller.
