Ghosts and shadows with X

Post by Peter We » Fri, 11 Nov 1994 02:39:02

I've got a Viewsonic 20" monitor and a Diamond SpeedStar PRO(VL) video card.
The card uses the CL-GD5428 chipset, and supports dot clocks from 25 to 85.
The monitor has horiz sync rates from 30-82 and vert refresh rates from
50-90.  I'm using the generic SVGA X server, and find that my display
(especially black letters on a white background) is disappointingly
blurry.  The characters are not crisply drawn.  All of them seem to be
surrounded by a faint ghost or shadow.  I'm using the video timings
suggested by the XFConfig86 tool.

How can I increase the sharpness of the display?  When I use this card under
Windows NT, it does not display this problem.  I've tried several different
timing sets, dot clocks and resolutions, and all of them exhibit this problem.
Any suggestions gladly welcomed.

I experienced the same effect with a #9GXE PRO VLB with 2MB RAM.  I had
a video extender cable connected to the card and monitor.  Apparently,
the cable has insufficient shielding (or I need to add a *or some
thing).  After I removed the extender, my screen got better.

Your mileage may vary.

1. ATI Mach 64 shadow/ghosting problem

Hello,

I have been informed that there is a known problem (and a XF86Config fix)
with the ATI Mach64 video card and "shadows" to one side on the borders, etc.
Unfortunately, the posted message thread has scrolled off of our news site.

Would some kind soul be willing to share this information? I have a
Gateway P5-120 with Vivitron 1776 monitor and ATI Mach64 (PCI) running
XFree86 3.1.1 under Linux 1.3.9, if this information helps.

Thank you for any assistance in this quest,
