DIP problems???

Post by Herb Conn » Tue, 07 Jun 1994 12:53:36

        I am trying to get a SLIP connection running using Linux Ver 1.0
and DIP Ver 3.3.7. (This is Slackware Ver 1.2 straight of of the currennt
Trans-Ameritech CD). Here is a blow by blow discription of what I get
when I run the DIP Script:

port /dev/cua1  && I am sure this is the correct device as I use it all
                && the time with minicom.

speed 38400     && Nothing special

reset           && I can hear the modem reseting through its speaker must
                && be the correct port

send ATZ1\n     && At this point I never receve an OK back from the modem.

        I would sure be gratefull if anyone can get me by this hurdle
before I go crazy

Thanks
Herb Conner

Herb, got this running just a short while ago.  I had no luck using the send
commands, either.  Apparently even with "echo on", the modem responses don't
get back to you at the command prompt.  So.. use an interactive session.
Issue "term" at the DIP prompt after setting your port and speed.  You can
then dial your host, login and note your dynamic IP address (if your
SLIPhost uses dynamic assignment).  When you're logged in, CTRL-] takes you
back to the DIP prompt, and you can "get $local <number you just noted>",
"get $remote <IP of your SLIPhost>" and "mode SLIP/CSLIP/PPP <whichever
applies>".  You'll drop out of DIP, and if all your other config. info is
correct (IP addresses in /etc/hosts, hostname, nameserver in
/etc/resolv.conf) you're on the matrix.

Regards,
Rich

Try substituting "\n" with "\r". Seems like the "\n" should work but it
didn't I saw someone recommending the "\r" in one of the posts and tried it
and it appears to work.

In the Summer Yggdrasil Plug&Play they used what appeared to be a "^M" (in
vi) at the end of the dial string.  I assume that it was a cntrl-M but
after deleting it in trying to get the script working, I could no longer
re-insert it. So I then ran into the "\n", "\r" mess.

Anybody want to explain what is actually happening here? I am not a big fan
of magic...

I use ^M in my Procomm for DOS scripts to relay a "return" key to the remote machine.  I tried using this
in my DIP script but it was not correct.  So I tried the \r and \n.  \r works correctly when it immediately
follows the string you wish to send.  For example send username\r.

           ^^

Try ATZ1\r to send a carriage return.

1. DIP problem: DIP creates bad lock file

It appears DIP 3.3.7 has a bug.  It creates a lock file in
/var/spool/uucp that has the wrong PID.  It should be the
PID of 'dip' but instead it puts a PID usually 1 less
than the dip PID.

Example:

dip PID = 7146
LCK..cua0 contains 7145

This will cause uucico to delete the lock file thinking it
is stale.   Then uucico can come in and interfere with the
SLIP connection.
To make things worse, uugetty would then try to reinitialize
the line after uucico finished ;-(

Is this fixed on a newer version of DIP ?

Software: Slackware 1.2, DIP 3.3.7, uugetty
