I am running ftape .10a, Linux kernel 1.0, libc 4.5.21 with a Colorado 250 tape
drive (on a Northgate 486/33 with an ATI VGA Ultra+ video board). Lately (over
the last few months or so), I've run into a problem with writes and reads to the
tape. For example, I may be in the middle of a 'tar cvf /dev/ftape /' when the
ftape driver will kick out an 'unrecoverable I/O error' message. At one time
or another in the past, I have been able to write the entire tar file to tape.
What is this due to? I notice that I can generally get more on the tape
if I give a 'mt -f /dev/tape reten' command just prior to the tar
command. Is this a physical problem with the tape or drive? Is it
a software problem?
Thanks for any advice.
