NEC 260 IDE CD-ROM...

Post by I am Ma » Fri, 17 Mar 1995 02:10:46

I have a Gateway 2000 PC with an NEC 260 IDE Cd-Rom...the Boot Kernel
(Slackware 2.1.0) recognizes my drive with a #26 message (?) but the Root
kernel and installation will not recogize the drive (i type
custom..."/slackware/slakware" as my source) has anyone solved this
problem or know where the latest root kernel for umsds144.gz can be
found??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

NEC 260 IDE CD-ROM...

Post by Nick Monyatovsk » Sun, 19 Mar 1995 16:25:38

        Help needed!

I am having problems Gateway 2000 + NEC-260R IDE CD-ROM.
        I have posted before, but my messages get deleted soon since I am
posting through my university. I have received several advices and
followed them to the best of my understanding. They are included as
attachments with this message. They suggested

(1) that I get a newer kernel and compile it. I got 1.1.95, compiled it,
but no progress. It says:

        /dev/nec260 is not a block device

(2) Also, I got Q series of disks, found the one that supports
NEC-260 and installed it. Then I did what is described below:

(3) I found this in some FAQ on the net. It said:
In order to get your NEC-260 cd rom to work, you'll need to edit
/usr/src/linux/drivers/block/nec260.c
In the defines in the biginning you'll need to set IRQ to 15,
set the I/O address properly (probably 0x170) and set the defines for
whether or not the drive is alone on the bus (which it also would be).
This is perfectly right. B u t  h o w  c a n  I  s p e c i f y  t h i s ?
This approach seems to be more productive, since after I edited the
nec260.c file and recompiled the kernel, the message that I've got was:
/dev/nec260 : controller not ready
mount /dev/nec260 : I/O address error
Which I think is closer to victory. I was confused about how to edit the
nec260.c file. There were 3 parameters to change. One of them was clear.
I wonder if someone who understands what those parameters are could tell
me how I should specify them. Please, help!

So this is what is in nec260.c file

1) /* Major device number */
MAYBE_STATIC int ner260_major= 26;  /* its #26 in Gateways I think */

2) IRQ = 15  /* Thats for sure */

3) /* Base I/O address for the IDE adapter registers */
nec260_base = HD_DATA;          /*Address is 170 for sure but how do I
                                specify it in this statement?????? */
4) /* Set this to 1 if the device is configured as the master on the bus */
nec260_master = ?  /* This I do not know about Gateway mechines */

5) /* Set this to 1 if the cdrom drive is on the bus by itself */
nec260_no_hd = 0 /* This I do not know */

What I know about my CD-ROM is
        Transfer mode: Programmed I/O
        Number of drives:       1
        Drive 0: Port=170 IRQ=15
/* this is the message that prints when I boot up in dos */

        I will be most endebted to someone who can help.
