SuSE 8.1 modem connection

SuSE 8.1 modem connection

I've recently installed SuSE on my computer, but have been having some
problems with stability.  Today for some reason has been better as far as
the system not*, with my scroll/caps lights blinking (I tweaked the
BIOS a little).  But I am still having a problem with my internet connection
staying connected for very long - especially when trying to use YOU.
Changing ftp servers with YOU helped get the first package, but since then I
can't get anything else without it disconnecting first.  And also while I'm
browsing, after fif* to twenty minutes, disconnect.

I've tried going in and looking at the modem configuration, but there
doesn't seem to be a whole lot you can configure with SuSE from what I've
seen or from what I've been able to find out in the manuals.  I come from
DOS/Windows, and I'm wondering where in Linux you can configure things like
the UART buffer, RTS/CTS, XON/XOFF, idle timeouts disconnect, etc.

Any ideas?

thanks,
trey

You should check your logs. "/var/log/messages" for instance.  I can't
comment further on "stability" without more info.  And Suse is one distro I
know nothing of.

What is "YOU"...? it's a bit hard to google for.

Seems likely that this is not a modem issue per se, but see below anyway.

$ man chat
$ man pppd

are the old school tools; you may have other, gui-ish packages installed.

1. SuSE 8.1 - kinternet - connection established but error

Anyone had this problem? SuSE installed clean, all hardware works and
checks out ok, kinternet initializes without problem. When I dialup my
ISP, kinternet dials through the modem OK, but just after password
prompt, it displays a "NO CARRIER" error **even thought connection has
been established** and I get no actual connection.

Any suggestions out there?
