I have the same problems with the "normal" xdm (no shadow) of XFree86-3.1.
Even worse, it makes normal users sgid root !!!!
I don't use xdm any more.

1.1.54/XFree86(tm)-3.1 strange gid-behaviour with xdm-shadow

I compiled 1.1.54 with gcc 2.6.0 and have the following problems:

 1) Netstat keeps telling me old ftp-connections where still alive.
They result from broken ftp-session which I cancelled on the remote
side because it was* after transmitting a file, the ftpdeamons
    are still there.

Active Internet connections
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address          Foreign Address        (State)
tcp        2      0 desaster:ftp           134.2.14.8:1715        CLOSE_WAIT
tcp        0      0 desaster:ftp-data      134.2.14.8:1770        ESTABLISHED
tcp        0      0 desaster:ftp-data      134.2.14.8:1790        ESTABLISHED

ftp        399  0.0  0.0  160    0 con SW   08:03   0:00 (ftpd)
ftp       1879  0.0  0.0  160    0 con SW   08:33   0:00 (ftpd)

 2) I have a group audio and users do have to "sg audio" before they
have the group-right. They are member of that group. I remember this
was not necessary some time ago, I think it must be since I upgraded
    to X11R6.
I use xdm-shadow from XFree86(tm)-3.1 for login. If I do "xterm -ls"
it has the same problem, but when I do "su - username" in the xterm,
it works.  If I login on a console instead off using xdm, it works,
    same goes for telnet.

Have other people seen these problems too, or is it to blame on using gcc 2.6
which is known to have some problems sometimes (though I have not seen any
yet and use it for 2 months now).

Please let me know - Michael Will

1. XFree86(tm)-3.1 truecolor and older apps

Now that I configured the new XFree86 right, I still have problems
with some nice apps like linuxxdoom, xv's visual schnautzer and
mpeg_play to cope with the new situation...

is ast least xv going to be fixed? It is so much more cool to have
the visual schnautzer without a private colormap as it was in the old 8bit
XFree86, if only the colors would be correct in the new 16bit version :-)

Cheers, Michael Will
