Linux 1.1.9x - 1.2.0 HANGS without notice

Post by Daniel Panca » Thu, 16 Mar 1995 09:26:27

We have a small network of 3 computers,
1 linux gateway that supports 10 modems via a BOCA 2016 w/NE2000
1 PC running windows TCP/IP  w/NE2000
1 news server w/NE2000

At random times, the linux machines hangup.(at differnt times) No
syslog, or messages...  A reboot by power is required to boot back
up...

This is happening about once or twice a day... A real problem for
dialup users...

Thanks for any help...

This is becomming a serious problem, What's the best way to debug this
type of problem?  Is there a switch to throw somewhere that will log
kernel activity and status?

Is there any kernal loggers available?  What level of debug is best
with klogd? .. I really need to get this resolved...

If VC-switching is still possible, a line like
*.*                                             /dev/tty5
in /etc/syslog.conf can be of help. Replace /dev/tty5 with another free
vc. I think it is good habit to scan the output of syslog from time to time,
especially in your situation.

1. 1.1.8x, 1.1.9x SMTP Problem

This is for you kernel developers ... I'm running on a 486/66, IDE disk
and Adaptec 1542cf for CD-ROM, kernel with PPP, SLIP, & on Ethernet.
With kernels up to 1.1.88, all is well ... but with 1.1.89 and later,
when I boot up, I get the following errors when sendmail tries to start:

Feb 24 13:11:53 spc280 sendmail[349]: problem creating SMTP socket
Feb 24 13:11:58 spc280 sendmail[349]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): getrequests:
cannot bind: Address already in use

I have tried Berkeley Sendmail 8.6.9 and 8.6.10.

Is this a known problem?

Thanks in advance,
Bill Heiser
