Maximum is defined as 63, you can edit /usr/src/linux/drivers/char and one of
the filles in there I believe.
Color on the console? You mean color ls? Get the color ls patch for the GNU
Fileutiles.

1. svgalib & virtual consoles & X
It used to that virtual consoles didn't work with X.
Then one day I saw the following comment on COL.misc:
Well, I tried this from a server, and indeed c-a-F1 got me
to a virtual tty console, but no combination of keys would get me
back to the windowmanager/xserver.
So, please, what's the magic incantation.
Then suppose that does work, will running svgalib from and
alternative VT mess up the original X servers image?
3. XDM makes my other virtual consoles have strange colors
5. #9GXE64pro and 16 and 24 bit color = no Virtual Consoles
6. Different Redhat 3.0.3 CD releases
7. Virtual Console loses its color
8. Transpose data from horizontal to vertical
9. No colors with virtual consoles: Why?
10. Wscons - do virtual consoles support bg/fg color assignments?
11. colors on virtual consoles (ie tty[1-9])
