mc Midnight Commander Help

Dear All

I'm afraid I'm relatively new to both UNIX and LINUX, but I have been putting a lot
of hours in in learning and have overcome virtually all the problems I have experienced.
However, there is one problem that eludes me. The problem is with MC (Midnight Commander).

I can get the program to run splendidly if I start it from any users account except for the
root account. When I type "mc" at the root account prompt nothing happens at all. If I press
CTRL C I get the prompt back but no mc. If I type "mc" and then go to another of my virtual
terminals and look at the jobs running with ps, LINUX shows that mc is a job, but I still
have no nice blue coloured screen on my root terminal!

Well having said that 99% of the time mc will not run from root. On the
odd occasion it does work.!!!!!

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've put CRs into your lines. Please don't let your lines run over 80
characters.

This is similar to a problem that I have. Packages which have pretty coloured
screens or mouse control (mc, pkgtool, netconfig...) don't seem to work. In
actual fact, they *do work (for me, at least). They just don't display
properly. Try moving your mouse around a bit after mc's had a chance to
load. You may be presently suprised !

1. debian-mc (Midnight Commander)

Can anyone help a newcomer with basic Linux use?
I have just installed debian linux by way of Infomagic sixpack, cd roms;
ok so far.
With 'dselect' I marked some relevant files (mc in particular to find my
way around the environment) and installed these.
1.    Where were these files installed to.........I can't  'locate'   mc

2.    I assume that mc executes by typing 'mc" at the linux prompt; it
doesn't.
What am I doing wrong ??????
Thank you in anticipation for any help you experienced people may offer.
