Removing screen char garbage?

Post by Andy Har » Tue, 12 Jul 1994 04:28:06

Hi,

If I accidentally view a binary file (more, etc) or direct it to the screen,
my display becomes garbaged. That is, all characters are substituted for
high ASCII (line drawing, symbols, etc).

I can't get the display back to normal and end up having to reboot.

Any ideas?

Yep, I discovered this today on my newly installed Linux when I
accidently looked at a binary with more as well.  Switching to another
VC and logging in, I found a "reset" command using "man -k terminal".
Switching back to the foobarred VC, I typed "reset" and pressed
return, and the terminal was restored.  So, check if you have reset
installed.  I think I saw a description of how it works in another
post I just read a few minutes ago, so it's probably common to most
(all?) distributions.

Thanks! I've also been told that ctrl-v, ctrl-o will work...

That will NOT work (give it a try: cat /usr/bin/grep ;-))

just type echo CTRL-V CTRL-O !!

1. Intel 845GL screen garbage instead of DM screen

At boot I sometimes get a screenful of vertical lines instead of the
display manager welcome screen. The only solution is to reboot.
The text is displayed ok at boot time. The display problem is never
seen with Windows/XP.
I do not remember seeing the problem with Mandrake 9.1
Intel 845GL Mandrake 10.0 Gdm Emachines T1742 Celeron 1.7GHz 128MB

Has anyone else seen this problem?
