Problems installing linux on IBM Aptiva 486

  Hey -

I'm attempting to throw some flavor of linux on my Aptiva 535 [486,
I believe it's ] with 32 megs RAM and a 10 gig hard drive.  The drive
has been checked for errors with MS Scandisk and doesn't have bad
sectors.  I've tried installing both Red Hat 6.2, Red Hat 7, and
Slackware Linux 7 - they all go through the complete installation
routines, but upon booting the screen freezes with but one character
on it: L.

Is this some LILO boot issue?  I can't get past this L screen and
have little to no idea where to go from here.  I'm somewhat familiar
with the OS, but that's once I actually get to a login prompt.

Could it be because I have such a large drive?  Bad memory?  LILO
loading issues?

  Any help/advice would be appreciated.

hey,
I don't know if I can really help.I remember having faced the same probleme.
I think I've overcame the probleme by booting from a floppy disk which  was
created during the installation process. Did you try that? In case it
doesn't work, try re-installing the OS chosing the custom stuff, and install
LILO not on the MBR but on the first sector of the boot/root partition. I
think this should do it.

1. 3c509 ethernet and IBM aptiva 486 DX2 66

I made two installations of Linux Slackware 96 on two different computers,
the installations was identical.

The first computer was a "noname" pentium and the other one a IBM aptiva
486 DX2 66. On the pentium everything is Ok. But on the IBM Linux dont
find the 3c509 ethernet card.

The IBM also run Windows 95 and ther is no problem with the card when
Windows is running. I tried to configure the card with different adresses
and different irq, I also tried to use boot parameters such as "LILO
ether=9,0x210".

The IBM did find the card once, and I was abel to ping the pentium and also
do ftp between them, when i rebooted the IBM without any changes it dident
find the card.

I tried almost eveything I colud think of but the computer found the card
only one time.

I use the bare kernel and the rc.modules command modprobe 3c509 to install
the card at boot up, it works on the pentium but not on the IBM why ?
