Help with installing LINUX

Help with installing LINUX

Post by Paul » Sun, 16 Oct 1994 04:04:02

Hi all.

I REALLY hoping that a guru here can help, so here goes...

I have tried to install the SLACKWARE version of Linux (v 2.0.0) onto my
PC. (It came on a cover mounted CD-ROM from PC-Plus).

I created the BOOTDISK from the /bootdsk1/sbpcd image, and then created the
ROOTDISK from the /rootdsk1/umsdos image (spelling?). Ok so far. Then I
reboot the PC with the BOOTDISK in drive A:, and get the LILO welcome
screen, I then pressed ENTER.

Next, I get "Loading RAMDISK", the floppy whirrs for a moment, then stops,
the prompt is line-fed, and then nothing.

Now, I have a friend who suggested to leave the machine for about 5 minutes
so that Linux could work out my hardware, but it still did nothing.

I called the Slackeware helpline in the UK, and the guy on the other end
didn't have a clue! (Not that I'm complaining, I know their service is a
free one, that they don't HAVE to provide - so no flames! :) ).

I got my friend to try and install, just to make sure the version that I
had wasn't a dud (he also has the same CD), and it worked fine for him.

Now, I installed a copy of OS/2 for Windoze about a month ago, and so did
my friend. My installation went fine, he had problems. Strange, huh?

I have also tried to boot the disk from LOADLIN/LOADLINX using the command:
loadlin(x) c:\dloads\temp\loadlin\sbpcd root=a: rw ramdisk=1440
and it still won't work. I have tried all suggestions in the docs that came
with LOADLIN and still nothing. I have tried taking all but my Multi-I/O
and video cards out of my machine, and STILL nothing!

I *REALLY* want to try Linux out, so here is my setup in the hope that some
kind soul will read all of the above "dross" and give me a solution (and not
before time, I can tell you! 8() ).

Setup:

HOMEMADE 486DX33 PC
INTEL 486DX 33MHZ
UM4980 MOTHERBOARD - PENTIUM UPGRADABLE - VESA LOCAL BUS x3 SLOTS
**PHEONIX** BIOS
16MB OF MEMORY

PANASONIC CR562-B CD-ROM PLUGGED INTO THE AWE32

1x1.44 OLIVETTI FLOPPY DRIVE
1xCONNER 252MB HDD - DRIVE C:
1xCONNER 212MB HDD - SLAVED TO DRIVE C: - SETUP AS DRIVE D:

Remember, I have had all but the I/O and VGA cards out (all other peripherals
disconnected), and it STILL wouldn't install. ***HELP!!!***

TIA
Paul
