Subject: Future Domain 8-bit problems
I have a Plextor 3024 SCSI CD-ROM attached to a Future Domain TMC8xx
BIOS-less controller card. It works fine under DOS...but seems flakey
under Linux. First of all, if I boot linux without a CD in the drive,
the drive is unmountable until I reboot Linux with a CD in the drive.
The second (and even bigger) problem is that CPU utilization when the
drive is being accessed is ridiculous. Any activity that reads from the
CD-ROM will hog around 95% of the CPU time (on a 486dx-33 with 12mb RAM),
making the system unusably slow and unresponsive.
The third problem is that the drive doesn't seem to work for audio disks
under Linux. It plays music CD's fine under MS Windows, but under Linux,
it plays a few seconds and then fails...after which the software will
claim there is no CD in the drive.
Can anyone help me with these problems, or do I need to change my hardware?
