LILO doesn't work

LILO doesn't work

Post by Chendi Zhang Gue » Fri, 19 Aug 1994 02:19:17

I can't access Linux from Lilo anymore! It happened after I accidently
deleted EMM386.EXE for dos.  I went to replace it with the DOS6.2 stepup
version but it didn't work. I went to my dos 6 upgrade disks and found
what I was looking for. After expanding it and trying it I rebooted.
After the initial startup screens (I have AMI-BIOS), it went directly
into dos! I can only run linux off a boot disk now.  Can someone help me
here?

Thanks in advance,
Chendi Zhang

LILO doesn't work

Post by Chendi Zhang Gue » Fri, 19 Aug 1994 03:40:53

On my AMI-BIOS system with:
486 33dx 8mb 512k oak vga system with a 420 WD caviar hard drive partitioned
into two for linux & dos, 120 meg hard drive for storing install files for
linux.  I set up linux and it worked for 2-3 monthes.  Recently, I accidently
deleted emm386.exe.  After accidently crashing the maching (in dos) by
running the wrong emm386.exe file ( i didnt expand it) i finally found
the correct EMM386.exe file off the DOS 6 upgrade disks. I fixed it and
rebooted to find my machine skips the LILO prompt and started dos like
linux wasn't even installed!.  I tested linux off a boot disk and it worked
fine.  My question is : is there any way to get back the Lilo prompt? I
don't want to run linux of a boot disk.

Thanx in advance.

I've got a CL5428, and I run it on a Gateway 1776 LE (CrystalScan) monitor.
(Which is really a MAG 17F, so I hear.)  I just used the 1152x900 and knocked
down the clock frequency to 85.

"1152x900"    85    1152 1184  1344  1528    900   901  903     935

Hope it works!

I have exactly that configuration. This works fine for me:

[VGA256 section]
  ViewPort      0 0
  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
  option "fifo_conservative"

[ModeDB section]
 "640x480"   41     640  656  680  792    480  480  481  500
 "800x600"   45     800  808  840  992    600  601  603  619
 "1024x768"  75    1024 1048 1184 1328    768  771  777  806 -hsync -vsync

  Try X11R6 for the green-mode features...

1. LILO: append='mem=80M' doesn't work

Hi, folks--

I have an IBM PC 750 (Pentium 133, PCI bus), dual-booting Red Hat
Linux 5.2 and WinNT 4.0. I boot Linux, first with NTLoader, then
LILO. Most of the Linux installation is on the second IDE hard drive,
but I have a minimal boot partition on the first hard drive.

The machine has 80M of RAM. I believe 16M is original, with the
remaining 64M being 3rd-party DIMMs. Anyway, Linux only recognizes the
first 64M. The POST and Windoze recognize the entire 80M, so there's
nothing obviously wrong with the RAM itself.

$ cat /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda8
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=20
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hdc1
        read-only
        append="aha152x=0x140,11,7,1,1,1 mem=80M"

I tried it without the SCSI stuff, and have also specified an exact
number of bytes in hexadecimal, but nothing seems to work.

Anyone have an idea what I can do about this?
