patch fails often when patching kernel.

Post by Jason Ru » Fri, 06 Jan 1995 05:28:03

I often have many files fail to patch when I am patching the kernel.
For Example,  I have recently down loaded a copy of patch76 and tried to use it
with linux 1.1.75.  I am using patch version 2.1.  After completing the patch I
had more than 30 files that patch rejected.  My usuall procedure is to look at
the rejected files and the patch file and figure out where they go.

Does everyone have the same problem?  Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Probably you forgot to read /usr/src/linux/README?
The main problem people tend to have is that they forget the -p0
flag to patch. (Giving -s is also a good idea, otherwise
error messages might drown in patch's chattering.)

[Sometimes, rarely, there is a real problem, but not
with `many files' as you write. It has happened once or twice
that a file disappeared without this being mentioned in a
patch. People who didn't notice this (e.g., by getting a
complete tar file) got the file doubled when this file was
reintroduced.]

When you patch, don't you have to do the make config, make dep, make clean,
and make zImage anyway??

Patch handles changes to directory structure poorly.  In the mid-70s the
kernel directory structure changed.  Try getting the full source tree.

Sometimes you can skip the make config, make dep, and make clean steps.
But it's safest to make clean; make zImage.

1. Patching Solaris 8 Intel fails, corrupt patch?

Hi,

I tried to patch Solaris 8 Intel but I always end up with a system
hanging at the configuring devices message. Has anybody encountered this
problem or maxbe solved it?

The systems are a P2/Asus P2B and a P2/Asus P2L.

I tried the recent (05/10/2001 and 05/29/2001) Patch Clusters as well as
MU4 on a installation from the media kits 01/00 and 01/01, the results
are the same.

MU3 works but is the same as the 01/01 media kit.

Thanks for help,
Markus
