Directory trouble with Term-NcFTP & Sunsite

Post by Alexandra Griff » Sun, 11 Sep 1994 23:36:01

For the past couple of days I've been unable to make usable
connections to Sunsite via TERM-NcFTP version 1.7.0.  It connects and
displays the logon message (the one mentioning FTPTool); I can also
change directories without trouble.  However, any attempt to list the
contents of a directory or grab a file with mget (which requires
pattern-matching against the directory) fails.  No error is indicated,
it just redisplays the prompt after doing nothing.  Doing a "get" as
opposed to an "mget" does work.

I can connect from normal TCP/IP hosts and get directory listings,
even using the same version of NcFTP but without TERM support.  Also,
Sunsite is the only FTP archive that seems to be having this problem!
All the others are still OK.  Switching TERM hosts doesn't help.

I know Sunsite has had some recent downtime; could they have changed
over to a new ftp server program and thereby caused this problem?
Anyone else even having a problem w/sunsite?

Yup.  Same problem, NcFTP 1.8.2.  This happens on a few other hosts,
too.  I think it has to do with NcFTP's ability to strip out the
preceding numbers from each incoming line (FTP to gatekeeper.dec.com and
try reading the MOTD, you'll see what I mean).  I haven't found a fix
yet, but now that it's happened to _SUNSITE_ I'm going to start looking
harder ...

Yup, last friday. I did not try to get or mget files, but listing directory
contents was not possible with Term-ncftp on Linux, ftp on sunos and ncftp
on Sunos; so it looks like the problem is at sunsite. sunsite is furthermore
difficult to connect to at this moment. I mostly get thinks like

Connected to sunsite.unc.edu.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

Moment; I'm running term-ncftp 1.70 already a long time without any problems
on all kinds of ftp sites including sunsite.unc.edu. Only since last friday
I do have the problem mentioned above, so I think you have to explain me
how this suddenly happens. I don't think is a problem with ncftp. I also
had the problem with ftp on sunos.

Same problem here.  What is up with Sunsite?

another one here. It says something like `Oops, couldn't get /tmp/ncftp234324
using other ftp sites: no problem. using ftp from other (real internet)
machine to sunsite: no problem.

So i finally am using the src.doc.ic.ac.uk mirror, as I should :-)

Uh, no.  Actually, there's a bug/feature in NcFTP that apparently
requires ftpd to open a passive connection to operate.  There seems to be
a couple flavors of ftpd that refuse.

You can see by yourself by setting verbosity to 2 in NcFTP.  Any file
transfer/directory requests will bomb out with an error (that happens to
be masked by default).

1. TERM/ncftp shared-mode trouble

This problem appeared a few days ago, and I'm not really sure what
instigated it... the term-linked version of ncftp *used* to work fine
in shared mode!

Anyway, I can establish the connection, change directories, etc. as
much as I want-- anything that uses only the FTP control connection
works.  The first thing transferred across the data connection (be it
a file or directory listing) comes through OK as well.  Attemping to
grab a second item over the data connection, however, causes the
program to die with no explanation-- it just returns me to the command
line upon attempting a second "ls", "get," "put," or whatever...

I get this behavior whenever running ncftp from a non-root account.
It doesn't matter if the account being used is the one that started
TERM or not, but root always works.

Could someone please help me here?  I probably changed a permission
setting or something at some point, but everything I've thought of
checking appears to be OK.  Sorry to waste bandwidth...

BTW, I'm using term-2.1.4 (tried backtracking to older versions) and
ncftp 1.70 (tried others as well).
