help with SLIP

Post by Wayne Walla » Sat, 24 Sep 1994 07:56:00

HA>Hello, I need some help.  I'm fairly new to Linux, and even newer to
HA>SLIP and networking.  What i need is a pointer to a FAQ or
HA>README, or some advice.  I am running slackware linux (kernel 1.0.9)
HA>and recently (yesterday) put a network card in, and got all the
HA>connections put in, got the hub connected, etc.  I also got a
HA>SLIP account yesterday.  The plan here is to get my roomates
HA>computers and mine networked together, then slip out thru the same
HA>account.  The info i need is: how to use the SLIP account with
HA>Linux, and how to get the network to connect.  When I boot up,
HA>it says cannot connect to network.  Any help is very appreciated

I am at that point to can you forward me any usefull info?

Please cc: me that information also.  I have the same version of the
software.  I have experience with SLIP and MSWindoze, but I have no
experience with SLIP/PPP and a Linux box.

Before you pursue your grand scheme, let me caution you that most
SLIP accounts only provide a single HOST address and then often
only dynamic.  SO, if you plan to have your roommates login to
your machine it should work.  If you expect to have them have
their own IP addresses and use your machine as a router then
you will probably need more expensive SLIP services sometimes
refered to as LAN access or IP NETWORK service, etc.

I will place a sterilized copy of /etc/connection.dip which
works for me so that you can access it at:
   ftp.netcom.com
as:   /pub/dwmorris/connection.dip
via anonymous ftp.  I found that I had to issue the dial twice as
the first did nothing.  Also, I highly recommend "The Linux Bible:
The GNU Testament" published by Yggdrasil for about $40usa.  I got
dip working using a combination of a lot of experince geting
various DOS TCP/IP packages talking SLIP, the man pages, and
the various bits of info in the 'bible'.  Finally, the connection
file is in the category of it works and is not refined.

Hope this helps.  (PS.  give me a couple of hours to get it uploaded
as I have to track down the required password to upload).

1. Greatly needing help with SLIP, if anyone's willing to help...

Okay... I've got SLIP working somewhat well.  I've still got three
problems, though.

1: When I do slipdown, it fails, giving me this message:
        Bad : modifier in $ ( ).

2: How do I get the hostnames to work.  When I telnet to another computer,
        I get the message:
<address> : Host name lookup failure

3: What is sliplock for?

Thanks in advance for your help...
