SCSI Boot Trouble with Ultrastore 14F

SCSI Boot Trouble with Ultrastore 14F

Post by Tom Griffi » Sat, 29 Jan 1994 15:06:23

I posted this once before to one linux newsgroup, but
got no answer, but two people wrote me and are having
the same problem.  Here it is again:

I originally installed Linux slackware with the pl13 kernel.

Afterward, I installed pl14 and it when booting from the hard
disk, I got:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    .
    .
    .
Calibrating delay loop..  ok - 25.04 BogoMips(tm)
Ultrastore 14F/24F/34F
scsi : 1 hosts.
  Vendor : MAXTOR     Model:XT-8760S  Rev: B7B
Type:    Direct Access       ANSI SCSI Revision:01ccs
Detected scsi disk sd0 at scsi0 id 0, lun 0
scsi0 : reseting for second half of retries.
US14F : reset: called
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then it hangs.  It boots fine from the boot floppy
created during installation.

I hope it isn't due to changes in the ext2 filesystem
between pl13 and pl14 kernels.  I won't have to re-run
mke2fs will I?

Thanks in advance,

I too am having the same problem, and I've resorted to disconnecting my
CD-ROM drive. :-( I can't say where the problem IS, but I can say where it is
NOT. I have a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 SCSI port, so it's not your hardware, and I
installed Slackware 1.1.1 (pl14 kernel) from scratch, so it's not a case of the
ext2fs being screwy. I think it has to do with the SCSI support in the kernel
being on * or something (I'm not a kernel hacker... YET). The only
difference between my error and yours is that mine says something like
"warning: command probably completed before *" or something like that
instead of "reset: called" like yours does.

1. SCSI boot problem w/Ultrastore 14F

I originally installed Linux slackware with the pl13 kernel.

Afterward, I installed pl14 and it wouldn't boot from the hard disk.
It would only boot from the older floppy.

While booting, I get:

    .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    .
    .
Calibrating delay loop..  ok - 25.04 BogoMips(tm)
Ultrastore 14F/24F/34F
scsi : 1 hosts.
  Vendor : MAXTOR     Model:XT-8760S  Rev: B7B
Type:    Direct Access       ANSI SCSI Revision:01ccs
Detected scsi disk sd0 at scsi0 id 0, lun 0
scsi0 : reseting for second half of retries.
US14F : reset: called
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then it hangs.  I'm afraid that it has something to
do with changes in the ext2 filesystem between pl13 and
pl14 kernels.  I won't have to re-run mke2fs will I?

Thanks in advance,
