Hi Jack! Do you get a "Connection Refused" message when you telnet to
the Linux box? If so, its probably worth checking /etc/inetd.conf.
You should find a line something like this:
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.telnetd
Make sure it isn't commented out (there shouldn't be a '#' on the
line).
peace, Ben

We are showing the same problem. Telneting into our machine after it
being up for a day or so will sometimes just hang at the login prompt, or
drop the connection as soon as it occurs. I've tracked the problem down
the the pty that telnetd is using.
Indeed, the connection is being made, because there's an entry for
the connection in the syslog. And if the conection hangs, I can telnet
*again* and get another pty, and I'm in business.
I am willing to track down this bug, could someone help me by
pointing me in the right direction? The bug *is* reproducable, it *is*
load dependant (the machine that handles 100+ users a day gets hit once a
day, while the machine that gets 5 users a day doesn't. And they are
*identical* <-:)
Also, this occured from 0.99pl9 (in January) when I first saw it, until
1.1.50 (current kernel). It's the major problem I'm now having with linux.

1. Network Problems - Remote Ping successful / telnet local successful / telnet remote failed
im working with a small Linux System with network support on an local
network. A ping from a remote machine is successful. A local telnet
session is also successful. A telnet session from the remote machine
will fail.
I can see with ifconfig, if the ping from the remote machine is running,
the tx counter increases. If I try the remote telnet session, i can
watch incoming packets but no packet will transmitted.
With tcpdump i see the telnet connect request from the remote machine.
At next my machines sends an arp-request about the address of the remote
machine and the remote machine replies the correct information, but
nothing will happen.
My routing table has an entry for the network an for my own machine.
Has anybody an idea whats going wrong.
Thanks
Peter
