Problem making SLS Linux 0.99pl12

Post by Steve Pershi » Thu, 26 Aug 1993 20:22:07

I just got a copy of SLS 0.99pl12 from tsx-11.mit.edu a couple of days ago,
and am unable to successfully "make zdisk".

The error I get is:

ld  -T 100000 -M boot/head.o init/main.o tools/version.o kernel/kernel.o mm/mm.o fs/fs.o net/net.o ipc/ipc.o fs/filesystems.a kernel/blk_drv/blk_drv.a kernel/chr_drv/chr_drv.a kernel/blk_drv/scsi/scsi.a kernel/chr_drv/sound/sound.a ibcs/ibcs.o kernel/FPU-emu/math.a lib/lib.a -o tools/zSystem > zSystem.map

I am running on a 486 PC clone, and have had no problems making previous
versions of linux.

This isn't an error message, it's normal status.  Did you have quotas
configured in your kernel?  If not, was your message (something like)

kernel/kernel.o: Undefined symbol _sys_quotactl ....
make: *** [tools/zSystem] Error 1

A bug in the source and Makefiles produces this error if quotas are
configured "off".  I hacked a fix for this--it's described in another
post with subject "Kernel compile error" from a couple of days ago.
It's a simple fix--only about 3 lines, or you might try re-configuring
with quotas "on".  As far as I know, that will work also.

I e-mailed this to Linus and Peter MacDonald, but no response yet.

1. Network problem on SLS .99pl12 (Network is unreachable)

Hello Linuxers,

I try to install networking in SLS .99pl12. I've installed packages a + b1 (that includes tcpip). I then modified the file /etc/hosts like this:

146.136.1.99    modem1
146.136.1.0     network

I set /etc/host to modem1
and /etc/domain to ntb.ch

the I did a reboot:

by executing /etc/rc.net there is the following error message:

SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

if I do a /etc/ifconfig all seems to look proper.

I tried to start networking without /etc/rc.net by first installing loopback device and the device eth0.

ifconfig eth0 146.136.1.99 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 146.136.1.255

(netmask is correct)

route add 146.136.1.99   ---->  SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

the ethernet card is a WD8003 and is correctly detected at boot time.

What's Wrong ???

Please send e-mail

thanks thomas
