nn-nntp on Linux?

Post by Stew Benedi » Tue, 13 Dec 1994 11:50:31

I've been having trouble getting nn to work running Linux 1.1.54, from
the slackware distribution.  I'm running a slip connection, rtin works,
although quite slow to initiate the newslists.  I was hoping nn could
speedup the process.  I installed it using pkgtool, but get various
errors such as cannot open file /var/spool/nn/MASTER.  Any insights?
I've read the nn-FAQ included with the pkg.  The nn handbook, and the
Network Administrators Guide - with no luck.  Thanks in advance - please

Run "/usr/lib/nn/nnmaster -I" to initialize the database.

Put the name of your NNTP server in "/etc/nntpserver".

Finally, put "/usr/lib/nn/nnmaster -l -r -C" in your
"/etc/rc.d/rc.local" file.

For what its worth,

I did all the above except I use cron to run nnmaster, I am getting all
kinds of articles but nn won't display any articles. It gets to the
connecting to NNTP server <blah.blah.blah> and then hangs. Would anyone
have any ideas as to where I should look to fix it?

Please ignore plea for help :-), The problem is fixed now. I had nnmaster
running almost all the time, tying up the SLIP connection, as soon as I
edited my crontab file to a more reasonable time it worked ok...

1. NN or NN-style newsreader for Linux w/out local NNTP database??

NN is the fastest most efficient way to get information from newsnet,
IMHO.
I've missed it since my company stopped building its NNTP database. :(

Well, now I'm running LINUX on my machine at home and I was wondering
if NN has changed or if any new command-line news readers with a
similar interface to NN can be accessed via a simple server name
via PPP like most of the other newsreaders(gui) like netscape,
freeagent on win95.

I've looked through the NN man page and it looks the same as it
ever did.
Any other NN lovers out there stuck without an NNTP server can
send me in the right direction?

Please e-mail directly.
