Videos not playing on the GeForce 4 MX 440?

Post by Steve Chan » Sun, 09 Feb 2003 06:25:35

I dunno how to put this, but...

mtv (mpeg tv), the commercial mpeg player, can play (mpeg/vcd) videos
on my system (the one with the GeForce 4 MX 440), but xine, xmms (with
the sdl-smpeg plugin), and mplayer all put out a blank (brown in xine,
blue in the others) rectangle where the video should normally be.

I play vlc and when it plays to the SDL plugin, it does the same
thing; when it plays to the x11 output plugin, it actually outputs
normally (although the video is still garbled on the bottom half of
the screen).

This has happened on every distro I have installed - my old slackware
(main), and even Mandrake 8.0, 9.0, and even the new 9.1beta, along
with RedHat 7.3 and 8.0.

I've been trying to find debugging data on why this is happening, but
I'm coming up zilch here.

Is there anyone around who knows anything about X, to say nothing of
why this is happening?

(MS Windows seems also not to like this card, as it has trouble
capturing output in Media Player via a screenshot - it captures a
blank rectangle where the video should be...hmmmmmm...)

Noting at all. That's what frustrates me.
I wouldn't even know how to interpret, say, a strace output.

When I recompiled mplayer to use the x11 driver, it works PERFECTLY.

Which narrows it down to the problem that only the x11 driver seems to
work for anything.

This is in no way good.
(I'm experimenting with creating another, powerful but cheap set top
box video player/recorder that will interface with a regular computer
via SAMBA and a network cable. It will independently do its PVR duties
and have its own filesystem which is shared via an open protocol like
SAMBA... all components will be linked via a network and a hub or a
router.. maybe they will all link to a hub, which will go out to a
router... ideas?? :)

I suggest you delete all of your drivers and reboot.

You have to tell him where they are located first, dumb-bell.  Can you do
that?

Youth.  It's a wonder that anyone ever outgrows it.

1. Using RH9 with GeForce 4 MX 440

I'm using ASUS V8170 graphics card (which is a glorified name for nvidia
GeForce 4 MX 440 with TV-out) with RedHat9 (stock standard Shrike). At
the moment I'm using the most rudimentary 'way' of enabling TV-out
(basically I unplug my monitor plug S-video cable that's connected to my
TV and reboot in order to get the card to output to TV instead of monitor).

I wonder if there's a way to have like a hotkey that would toggle output
from monitor to TV-out without having to reboot. This functionality
(toggle) is available under win32, but I haven't been able to find
anything for under Linux.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
