Recompiling kernel - Slackware 2.0.0

Post by Chris O'Reg » Wed, 06 Jul 1994 03:01:28

I am having trouble recompiling the kernel (1.0.9) under
Slackware 2.0.0.  I have followed all the steps in the README file
(checked the symbolic links, make mrproper, make config, make dep
and finally make zImage).  The compiler chokes when it gets to
ptrace.c:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -m486 -c ptrace.c
gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 11
make[1]: *** [ptrace.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-1.0.9/kernel'
make: *** [linuxsubdirs] Error 2
darkstar:/root/linux#

This is after a fresh install of the a, ap and d series (I had similar
compiling problems before with 1.1.18 from the q series--decided to
re-install fresh and try with the default kernel source while I'm still
fiddling around).

Why can't I get this thing to compile?!  :-(

In nearly all cases, the 'signal 11' error indicates a hardware problem --
usually something to do with memory.  Some things you can try to test the
theory:

1. Increase the wait states (in the CMOS settings)
2. Disable the RAM cache (also in CMOS)
3. Lower your CPU speed.

If the compile makes it after you do any/all of these things, you've got
hardware trouble. Maybe your RAM isn't up to specs.

Good luck,

Pat

I recall it may also mean that there's not enough virtual memory. Reasons
include:
- no swap space at all, and <16 MB RAM
- swap space too small or not activated

1. Problems after recompiling kernel on Slackware 4.0 installation

I seem to be having problems after having recompiled the kernel for a new
installation of Slackware 4.0. After I recompile the kernel and reboot, the
machine says:

LILO Loading Linux.......
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

then everything stops. The machine no longer responds. Even the keyboard is
useless. Here is my config:

2.1GB Maxtor IDE        boot drive root and swap
1.1GB Seagate SCSI    secondary mounted on /share

    NCR/Symbios C810 based SCSI adapter

I can get into the system by booting off of the original boot diskette.
I've tried to recompile the kernel this way but I still can't get it back
up. Anyone have any suggestions. TIA.
