can anyone tell me if I can use a viper in 8514 or Vesa mode with linux?
I've read all the info on this and its not clear whether this is possible.
Has anyone had any luck getting a viper to work?
Thanks
Mike

1. Viper Pro PCI 4Mb VRAM and VESA modes
Hi budding X go'ers,
yeah, yeah, before anyone sends a message back saying "Why did you
buy a Diamond Viper Pro card?" I actually originally had a Trident 8900CL
card which worked beautifully with XFree86 2.1 and higher. However, I saw
the distribution for XFree86 3.1.1 and read about Diamond Viper support now
included, and I had seen a Viper Pro on a DOS system and loved it... Silly me
forgot to read the "fine print": NO Viper Pro Support.
OK, there's my sob story, here's the question. Since using the Viper Pro in
DOS I noticed that the card supported all the popular VESA Super VGA modes,
ie. no device driver was needed. It seems that it has VESA compatability built
into the card. However, since I have used XFree86 for a while I noticed there
has never been a "Generic" Super VGA server included. For example, Windows for
Workgroups 3.11 has Super VGA drivers included which work for many cards.
I'm still confused as to how DOS can use VESA support, but not Linux/X windows.
If anyone has any information regarding this or just plain support for Viper
for others to see.
Oh, BTW: I have read the README.P9000 file that comes with XFree86-3.1.1 and
they too haven't made one yet.
Thanks
Mike BP
