Help: To improve my X-windows....

Post by Cingoski Vlatk » Sat, 22 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hi to all,

I am running the XFree86 ver 3.3 on my Red Hat Linux ver. 4.2 (kernel
2.0.30)
using Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Video card - with 4MB VRAM. Unfortunately,
the
maximum that I can get is 8bpp for 1280x1024!!! If I tried startx --
-bpp 16
then the maximum resolution is 800x600 :((

Is there any possible way to increase my resolution at 16 bpp somehow
(some new driver or so) or I must buy a new Video Card? Somebody out
there that
solved this problem already??

I would also like to ask how to add sound to my Linux? I can play audio
CDs
with no problems, however I can not play anything with Real Audio Player
or Midi, Au, etc.??

I tried to install OSS - but it gives me only 20 min of time to play and
then
I have to restart everything (soundoff, soundon, etc). Is any other way
to make my LINUX 'loud'! Some free program or so??

thanks,

Vlatko

P.S. I will appreciate any answer directly on my email address, since I
am too
busy to read the newsgroups. Thank you very much.

Ctrl+Alt+keypad_+ increases resolution
Ctrl+Alt+keypad_- decreases resolution...

By that I mean the '+' and '-' keys on your numeric keypad...

Of course, this depends on whether your X is setup for the resolution you
want at that depth...

If you look at the docs for the ViRGE on S3's web site, you
will see that S3 doesn't claim that the DRAM ViRGE can do any

95MHz for these modes.  A modeline like:

  ModeLine "1024x768" 80 1024 1044 1164 1312  768 777 779 822

works.  You may notice that Diamond's windows drivers will let
you do higher.  This is because they are overclocking the Virge.
You can overclock it in XFree too with the DacSpeed keyword
in the Device Section of the XF86Config file. eg.
  DacSpeed 135 95 60 60
Sets the new clock maximums for 8,16,24 and 32 bpp respectively.
It is not recommended that you do this though, since it may
damage your card.

If you want to do high resolutions in high color depths
you should not buy a DRAM card.

                                Mark.

1. X-windows in Windows 95 and type writers in X-windows

Hello!

I have 3 questions about X-windows:

Is there a good graphical bases typewriter (not editor) in which
i can write and layout text in x-windows, without using a bunch
of codes as in e.g. latech.

Is it possible to make a telnet like connection in a MS windows
based PC to a unix machine which is capable to run the X-windows
system. So i could use for example Xmaple when I am sitting home
where i dont have unix, but I do have a fast pc and internet.

Is there a special X-windows newsgroup?

Please e-mail me because i cant read the newsgroups so often.

thanks
