Media Vision Pro/Premium 3D soundcard support?

Media Vision Pro/Premium 3D soundcard support?

Post by Pete Casc » Sat, 17 Sep 1994 09:30:42

Hi.  I just bought a Plextor 4Plex quad-speed CD-ROM drive.  I'm looking at
buying a SCSI-2/soundboard to hook it to.  I liked the features of the Media
Vision Pro (or Premium) 3D and what people had to say about its sound quality
in comp.hardware soundcard discussions.

But the problem I see is that it's not mentioned at all in the HOWTOs.  Has
anyone tried it?  I called Media Vision tech. support and they say the SCSI-2
chip is an "NCR CamCore" (no serial number) and it's used in a CorelSCSI card
also.  I don't think it's hardware-compatible with any other boards.  On the
DOS side, I believe a device-driver or TSR is loaded to provide SoundBlaster
API compatibility.

Should I ignore how good this card is on the DOS side and get another?

Thanks.

I just got a call back from the developer support guy (Bruce) at Media Vision.
The SCSI chip is an NCR 406A.  I don't see that one mentioned in the SCSI HOWTO
(just NCR 53*).  Where do I find info on the chip interface, if I have to
modify a driver myself?

On the sound side, he says that the only way to use it in Linux currently is to
boot DOS with the PA3D driver, then reboot to Linux with the SB-Pro driver.

And, finally, he says that two people have purchased the $25 "Jazz Family SDK"
CD with the intention of writing Linux drivers.

Anyone with further details?

I have this same card, I don't use the CD-ROM SCSI port, but I would like
to get the card working for sound under linux though.. If anyone
had any ideas I would like to hear them.. BTW it is a nice DOS/WINDOWS
sound card. even though it does not support ProAudioSpectrum compatability

1. Media Vision Premium 3D supported?

couldn't find this in the sound.howto nor scsi.howto ...  Is
the Media Vision Premium 3D (sound + SCSI-2) supported under linux ?
The souncard.faq on rtfm.mit.edu claims it is not compatible with the
PAS-16, so is there separate driver for it under linux?  (and what
about MVision's ProSonic SCSI?)

        thanks.
